TITLE: Soul Searching in Creekmouth
ARTIST: Tamara Froud
LOCATION: 111 River Road, Barking Creekmouth, IG11
DESCRIPTION: Creekmouth Heritage Mosaic Part of the larger Creekmouth Heritage Project which involved 4 artists making various artworks relating to the heritage of the Creekmouth area of Barking. The mosaic was designed with the help of the local community who discovered some of the history through photos, facts and memories during the design sessions. They helped to choose a lot of the information that was included in the final design. The mosaic was designed to work on two levels. From a distance, the image shows in the foreground, the Princess Alice Disaster of 1878 and two old souls discussing the good old days. In the background you can see the old Creekmouth Village and the pub which has been there since the 1700s, the factories that dominated the area and a Handley Page plane – who developed and tested his first flying machines in the area. The water in the middle references the location on the banks of Barking Creek and the Thames and events that shaped the village’s history. From close up, however, the water flowing from the old souls’ mouths is printed with details, memories and facts about life in the area. Thanks to Carrie Reichardt for sharing her tile printing secrets – love this process and the detail it allows you to add.
