TITLE: Mosaic of Ivy leaves
ARTIST: Byzantine Period
LOCATION: The Crypt Museum under St. George Orthodox Cathedral
DESCRIPTION: The Crypt Museum under St. George Orthodox Cathedral. Fragment of mosaic floor bordered by a wall, shows a narrow panel of interlaced motifs and a garland of ivy leaves. These motifs are typical of 5th Century churches and may therefore be part of the “Anastasis”, otherwise known as the Resurrection Church. This church was built in 460 and is known to be located in the vicinity of the famous Law School. Remains of six successive churches were found during the excavation process. The Cathedral is the oldest church in the city of Beirut, Lebanon, and one of the oldest in the region - a testament that Christianity has been rooted in the region, and in Lebanon, since the religion's debut.
